IV Therapy FAQ
Intravenous (IV) infusion therapy at Plastic Surgery of Westchester utilizes hospital grade IVs and injectable saline / ringer’s lactate solutions that are then prepared with 100% bioavailable vitamins. Unlike a hospital treatment, our infusions are given in a peaceful spa setting for a calm and relaxing experience.
During the first visit, a doctor or nurse practitioner will discuss your main complaints and desired outcomes with you. They will review your medical and surgical history and all medications you are taking. If you have any complex medical conditions, you may be asked to obtain blood work or further testing and / or your personal physician’s approval prior to receiving any infusions.
Make sure you are well hydrated prior to your visit. We suggest drinking one to two 16oz. bottles of water beforehand. Dehydration can make it difficult to insert an IV.
The number and frequency of treatments will depend on certain factors. We take into account your current health status and response of your body to the treatments when recommending a follow-up treatment. Vitamin therapy infusions can be done as frequently as every week or just as needed. In some cases, you may have several infusions scheduled regularly, followed by maintenance therapy with occasional treatments thereafter.
Most patients will feel better right away. Due to a busy lifestyle, many people are chronically dehydrated and deficient in certain vitamins and minerals. Thus, once you are hydrated and nutrients are replenished, your symptoms will improve quickly.
Sometimes, you may feel tired or unwell after an infusion. This likely indicates that you are in the process of detoxifying. When toxins are pulled out of the tissues, they re-enter the blood stream. Even if you do not feel well at this stage, the process is one of healing and cleansing. After this period, an overall improvement in your sense of well-being is expected.
Apply pressure to the IV site for 2 minutes and keep a band-aid in place for one hour after the infusion. Ice packs can decrease swelling and relieve any initial discomfort at the IV site. We encourage you to drink plenty of fluids (one to two 16oz. bottles of water) and continue to stay hydrated after your infusion. Please call the office if you have any questions, concerns, or experience any of the following after your infusion: significant swelling that persists, redness over the vein, pain in the vein / arm that is not improving or worsening, headache that does not resolve with increased hydration or over-the-counter pain medications (such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or acetaminophen). If you feel like you are having a life threatening emergency, please call 911.
