What to expect after breast reduction surgery.
In this video, Dr. Nicole Nemeth, an American Board–certified plastic surgeon, explains what patients can expect after breast reduction surgery: recovery timeline, common symptoms, and key aftercare tips for optimal healing.
After breast reduction surgery, it’s normal to experience swelling, soreness, and temporary bruising as the body begins to heal. Most patients are advised to wear a supportive surgical bra to minimize swelling and protect the incisions during recovery. Activity is usually limited for the first few weeks, with light movement encouraged to support circulation while avoiding strenuous exercise or heavy lifting. As healing progresses, discomfort typically decreases, and swelling gradually subsides over several weeks. Follow-up appointments allow the surgeon to monitor healing, address concerns, and guide the safe return to normal activities. Final results continue to refine over several months as tissues settle and scars fade, revealing improved comfort, proportion, and overall breast shape.
